Protect Your Design: Solve Organizational Problems with Systems Thinking

IMAX, Thursday 10:00 am - 10:45 am

The talk will compare a systems thinking framework of analysis with the design thinking frameworks employed by UX practitioners. In contrast to user-centered design practices, the systems approach pushes practitioners to take a whole-system view of the environment, integrate multiple perspectives, increase scope, treat problems as symptoms, and offer future state designs as contingent interventions rather than fixed solutions

The use of the systems thinking framework will be illustrated by a real-world case study of a strategic, enterprise-level IT project that was stalled due to organizational and cultural issues. By applying UX research techniques and a systems thinking framework, the IT and UX project team addressed some intractable design issues and positioned itself for success.
