Krysta Chauncey, Ph.D. is the founder of Action Potential Acumen LLC. In the past 15 years, she has designed workflows for rail engineers reviewing near-misses, optimized materials comprehension for retail investors, interviewed Special Forces avalanche assessment instructors, and created product roadmaps for robots supporting people with dementia.
Her work has guided the development of autonomous vehicles, military and medical equipment, in-store retail experiences, social robotics, and investment dashboards. Upgraded product-behavior fit has resulted in impact such as improving remote operator task efficiency by 40%, unlocking $30 million in annual operating cost savings.
Looking Beyond Assumptions: Designing the UX of Robotics for People with Dementia
People with dementia who stay connected to social support often experience improved clinical outcomes and quality of life, so many care organizations are interested in maintaining these connection. Social robotics seems equipped to support this, but as usual, the difficulty is in the details: how, exactly, should an in-home robotics system support this goal?
In this talk I will tell the story of engaging with people with dementia and their family caregivers to learn about their situation, and how the fundamentals of our product plan were defined by what we learned. Curious, directed listening allowed us to explore potential users’ context, priorities, and constraints, while remaining both open enough to catch the unexpected and focused enough to remain relevant to the project at hand
