From Confrontation to Collaboration: The Developer-Designer Relationship

IMAX, Thursday 11:00 am - 11:45 am

We’ve all seen (and probably experienced) a toxic developer-designer relationship. It’s a major red flag when a designer tells their developer counterpart how to do their job because they “know” code, or when a developer puts a designer's most prized design into a backlog blackhole. In this session, I’ll talk about the infamous developer-designer relationship and how this pairing can go from toxic collaboration to peacefully co-owning the product experience.

We’ll take a look at who or what’s to blame (spoiler alert: power dynamics, historical patterns, and poor process are major players), the benefits for working in a co-ownership approach, and tips that have worked for my design and developer teams at Nielsen Norman Group.
